    Within Communications, Marketing and Public affairs, the Strategic Communications team is an award-winning group with a collective will to achieve ambitious goals. The team is responsible for raising the profile of the university through media relations, marketing, social media and innovative storytelling approaches on a variety of platforms aimed at different audiences. We are seeking an equally talented Social Media and Visual Content Specialist to support our goals.

    Role Summary:

    As a key member of the Strategic Communications team, the Social Media and Visual Content Specialist will be responsible for producing and managing visually driven content to express McMaster's brand on several platforms, with a strong focus on social media content creation. Reporting to the Associate Director, Content, this role will design visual and social media content from initial concept to completion, to advance university priorities. Along with producing content, this role will support the university's proactive social media strategy by managing a content calendar and assisting with community engagement. Photo and video content creation using a smartphone is required. The role creates a variety of content for the university to reach a variety of audiences, including researchers, students, alumni, and external partners.

    Accountabilities:

    Visual Content Creation (with a focus on graphic design)

  • Create, edit and produce digital and multimedia branded content, including graphics, and storytelling assets to support Strategic Communications and university goals.
  • Use design tools and multimedia solutions to generate meaningful and impactful digital content.
  • Develop original and custom graphic design and communications which may be include, but is not limited to, websites, social media campaigns, digital advertising, print and digital magazines, newsletters and reports to support news, marketing and other brand assets and communications.
  • Provide insights and recommendations to produce engaging content to meet specific needs.
  • Create and gather text, graphics, illustrations and photo images.
  • Gather and compile information necessary to complete projects.
  • Provide design advice to various audiences.
  • Develop a cost-effective strategy for all design work produced.
  • Proof and edit material for accuracy and completion.
  • Take photos and shoot video as needed.
  • Social Media Management

  • Design and deliver social media and digital campaigns to achieve outreach goals.
  • Create engaging social media visual and video content from concept to completion, including pitching ideas, filming using a smartphone or other camera, editing and revisions.
  • Manage social media campaigns and presence in social networking sites including Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter/X, LinkedIn and other similar community sites, posting on relevant blogs and seeding content into social applications.
  • Understand the target audience for each social media account, help to develop and post engaging, relevant and timely content in a variety of media including photographs, video that support Faculty, Department and Program goals.
  • Monitor the impact of social media and digital programs, and analyze, review, and report on effectiveness of campaigns to make adjustments for maximum results.
  • Provide insights and recommendations to produce engaging content to meet specific needs.
  • Monitor social media including trends and applications.
  • Work closely with the Associate Director and team to develop and implement appropriate policies and procedures related to social media, online digital presence to complement social media campaigns and the delivery of campus-wide messaging, ensuring that all posts and activity complements the university's overall strategic plan and stated priorities.
  • Follow social media trends and practices to stay up to date on these evolving tools and produce effective communications pieces.
  • Other Skills and Attributes

  • Experience troubleshooting technical problems with software.
  • Adhere to established university and external deadlines and timelines.
  • Keep abreast of new developments in software and hardware as department usage and software features are upgraded.
  • Keep abreast of developments and trends in digital and multimedia communications and technological advancements.
  • Research and implement current trends and practices to produce effective communication pieces.
  • Consult with campus partners and collaborators regarding project requirements.
  • Participate in Communications, Marketing and Public Affairs and/or department/faculty projects such as project teams, committees and work teams.
  • Working knowledge of basic web coding to enhance the visual appeal of digital stories.
  • Qualifications:

  • A College Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design, Multimedia, Communications, or related field. A McMaster degree would be an asset.
  • Requires a minimum of 4 years of prior experience.
  • Advanced level of proficiency in social media platforms, including management tools such as Hootsuite.
  • Experience creating social media content by using a smartphone as well as visual and video creation tools such as CapCut and Canva etc.
  • Experience creating content and managing visual social media platforms such as Instagram or TikTok.
  • Experienced in using Adobe suite of design tools to generate meaningful and impactful digital content is an asset.
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills (e.g. written and public speaking).
  • Project management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent customer-service skills and strong service orientation.
  • Time management and multi-tasking abilities.
  • Superior attention to detail and design.
  • Knowledgeable about McMaster university policies and guidelines and Communications, Marketing and Public Affairs policies and procedures.
