    The Impact You will Make:

    Child rights are at the core of how Save the Children Canada is responding to climate change. Save the Children is committed to securing climate justice for children and, given the scale and urgency of the climate crisis, must urgently increase impact for children in this area. The Senior Climate Justice Advisor plays a critical role in achieving this both in Canada and abroad. The Senior Climate Justice Advisor ensures that climate justice is embedded within our work in gender equality, children in crisis and Indigenous child rights. The purpose of this role will be to translate strategic opportunities into high quality, technically sound partnerships, resourcing and advocacy positions. The Senior Climate Justice Advisor, will be responsible for leading aspects of the implementation of our Strategic Goal on Climate Justice and helping position Save the Children as the leading organization on Climate Justice for children. Reporting to the Head of Gender Equality and Program Impact, this position will also provide technical quality assurance and oversight to the climate justice portfolio.

    Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

    Thematic & Strategic Leadership

    • Support the translation of SCC's climate justice strategic goal into concrete initiatives to drive the implementation of the strategic goal.
    • Monitor progress on the implementation of SCC' climate justice goal, including intersection with Children in Crisis, Indigenous Child Rights and Gender Equality goals.
    • Advise SCC Senior Leadership on strategic decisions related to climate justice.
    • Manage and acquire strategic partnerships with advocacy, research, and technical partners in the area of climate justice.
    • Collaborate globally with peers across Save the Children and Canada participate in relevant climate change working groups

    Business Development and Donor Engagement:

    • Accountable for leading new opportunity generation from institutional funding sources and supporting new opportunity generation from private funding sources for climate justice programs, in alignment to global and strategic plan and Canadian revenue generation targets.
    • Lead technical oversight of proposal development, leveraging technical expertise and project learnings from Save the Children programs in climate justice.
    • Cultivate and strengthen relationships with key funders/donors, research institutes, peer NGO agencies, partners, and sector thought leaders in climate justice.
    • Ensure compliance with the environment accountabilities of donors in proposal development.
    • Support the completion of GAC environmental annexes ad integrate environmental sustainability principles into logic models and project management frameworks. Integrate focus areas from Canada's International Climate Finance Program where applicable.
    • Ensure that collaborative, partner-led approaches to business development processes are a norm in ways of working.

    Advocacy and Communications

    • Support the development and execution of advocacy strategy to influence change domestically and internationally relating to the intersections of climate justice, children in crisis, gender equality and Indigenous child rights.
    • Support the development of high-quality thought leadership materials and leading positioning activities such as representation at industry panels, presentations to donors, participation in external practitioner networks, and global Working Groups
    • Aligned to an evolving Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns strategy, support a partner-led and youth-led advocacy approach to climate justice.
    • Support the production of high-quality thought leadership materials and other products to engage the public around climate justice
    • Act as a spokesperson for the organization around climate justice.

    Technical Quality Assurance and Portfolio Oversight

    • Provide leadership and strategic oversight of the SCC's Climate Justice portfolio.
    • Provide high quality technical assistance to program delivery teams, building a solid evidence base to support progressing innovations to scale in the area of climate justice.
    • Identify and assess environmental risks in development and humanitarian programming, create mitigation plans and identify opportunities for environmental sustainability within core thematic areas.
    • Aligned to the role of a SC member and donor expectations, maintain line of sight on implementation quality through effective relationships with partners, Regional and Country offices, enabling timely provision of technical input and oversight.
    • Review project deliverables and donor reports from a technical quality control perspective
    • Support projects' monitoring and evaluation and contribute to disseminate projects' learnings.
    • Work closely with other technical advisors on high quality programmatic integrated approaches and models

    Staff Management, Capacity Strengthening and Mentoring

    • Be the people leader to the Livelihoods Advisor
    • Support and mentor SC Canada staff, National Reconciliation Program staff and partners in growth climate change priority, including integrating climate priorities into their work.
    • In compliance with HR policies and the Collective Agreement, lead employees using a performance management process that includes performance goal setting, timely feedback, and recognition
    • Manage new employees onboarding, ensuring employees receive relevant training and tools to be successful in their roles
    • Model behaviours consistent with Save the Children values, actively creating an organizational culture that reflects the organization's values and principles
    • Managerial responsibilities of ensuring health and safety, proactive risk management through organizational policy enforcement and maintaining currency of organizational policies and procedures, and integrating Child Safeguarding practices across our work

    Qualifications (include but are not limited to):

    • Master of Climate Change, Environment & Sustainability, or related field
    • 10+ years' work experience in international development, with a focus on climate justice. Experience developing strategies and action plans. Experience with implementing environmental risk assessments.
    • 3 years of experience in people management
    • Demonstrated experience in developing and executing strategic plans in the area of climate justice;
    • Demonstrated experience and expertise in designing and implementing approaches to advance climate justice outcomes in low income and fragile contexts;
    • Experience working with Indigenous communities or knowledge of Indigenous partnerships principles.
    • Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing and evaluation of gender-responsive and gender-transformative programs in the areas of climate justice;
    • Demonstrated experience in developing organizational policy positions and supporting the delivery of advocacy strategies;
    • Demonstrated experience in a technical advisory role, successfully leading the design, implementation and impact measurement of climate justice programs and strategies;
    • Strong understanding of the Canadian partner landscape;
    • Strong knowledge of the Feminist Assistance Policy, with a focus on the Environment and Climate Action Area and FIAP's Strategic Environmental Assessment, as well as Canada's national environmental commitments, critically, the Impact Assessment Act of 2019.Programming;
    • Demonstrated experience in direct line management of staff.
    • Strong technical expertise and skills on the intersections of gender equality and climate justice, and the intersections of children in crisis and climate justice;
    • Strong knowledge of climate change issues and their impact on Indigenous communities;
    • Strong knowledge of the climate justice policy landscape in Canada and internationally;
    • Knowledge of cultural humility and safety
    • A demonstrated commitment to localization
    • Knowledge of Global Affairs Canada's Results-Based Management (RBM) approach and Feminist International Assistance Policy;
    • Demonstrated thought leadership expertise such as contributions to articles, blogs, academic journals; speaking engagements, leading conference presentations and panels
    • Is a strategic big picture thinker, with the ability to engage at detailed project level
    • Strong leadership and management skills
    • Is innovative, develops new ideas, and demonstrates adaptability
    • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to develop strong working relationships across cultural and organizational boundaries with internal and external stakeholders, and managing through influence
    • Superior English verbal and written skills; proficiency in French and/or Spanish considered an asset
    • Comfortable working independently as well as with receiving and accounting for direction and engaging as part of a dynamic team
    • Well-developed organizational skills; ability to manage multiple tasks
    • A high degree of self-sufficiency and initiative
    • A willingness to travel to field sites internationally, including in remote areas
