    The Southern Chiefs' Organization (SCO) requires a Jordan's Principle Coordinator to support First Nation children and families attending schools within the Winnipeg School Division.


    BACKGROUND:

    SCO is a growing and dynamic regional Indigenous organization that represents 34 Anishinaabe and Dakota Nations and more than 87,000 citizens in southern Manitoba.

    SCO was established 25 years ago by the Chiefs as an independent organization to protect, preserve, promote, and enhance First Nation peoples' inherent rights, languages, customs, and traditions through the application and implementation of the spirit and intent of the Treaty-making process.

    Jordan's Principle is named in memory of Jordan River Anderson, a young boy from Norway House Cree Nation.

    Jordan's Principle is a child first initiative intended to ensure that First Nation children receive public services ordinarily available to other children due to jurisdictional disputes.

    The goal of the initiative is to connect First Nation children and their families with quality services, support, and resources to achieve holistic outcomes.

    The SCO Jordan's Principle Coordinator at the Winnipeg School Division is a valuable member of the team and works with families, educators, and support staff to access programs, services and supports to increase educational success for First Nation children.

    The successful candidate has knowledge of and a genuine interest in helping children and families to navigate and connect with the programs, services and supports to which they are entitled.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Utilizing a strength-based approach to build confidence, focus on solutions and engage the family, the SCO Jordan's Principle Coordinator will work with educators and families to support First Nation children at the Winnipeg School Division by:
    Working with children, families, educators, support staff, and others to identify the resources needed to address gaps and ensure positive educational outcomes
    Assisting with the application process to access federal Jordan's Principle resources and services for children who require educational, health or social supports
    Providing navigation support to appropriate programs, departments and/or agencies and working with professionals in a responsive and coordinated manner
    Attending school case conferencing with families as required
    Collaborating with appropriate service providers and/or programs both within Winnipeg School Division and SCO, as well as externally such as with:
    First Nation Jordan's Principle programs located in Winnipeg and across Manitoba
    Indigenous Services Canada
    Various provincial programs
    Others
    ~ Maintaining confidentiality in accordance with privacy legislation and standards to ensure personal information is kept private, safe, and secure


    SPECIFIC RESPONSIBLITIES:
    Provides Jordan's Principle supports and services for First Nations children referred by Hanover School Division educators and support staff, or via self-referrals by parent and caregivers
    Provides consistent, comprehensive, competent, and culturally appropriate services
    Coordinates and shares Jordan's Principle information, encourages that children with unmet needs and their families secure access to services and supports, assist with application to Jordan's Principle, and fulfil requests/referrals as required
    Builds and nurtures relationships across community-based programs, with service providers, First Nations, and federal, provincial and territorial programs and services
    Ensures children and families receive high quality culturally appropriate services and supports across all stages and levels of care
    Collects, analyzes, and interprets program statistics and data for reporting purposes
    Adhere to SCO and Winnipeg School Division policies, procedures, and standards. Provide services in compliance with all laws and privacy legislation including but not limited to The Personal Health Information Act (Manitoba)
    Perform other duties as assigned
    EDUCATION &


    QUALIFICATIONS:
    Post-secondary degree, diploma or certificate in related field such as social work or education is preferred
    Minimum of five (5) years of experience working in the sector
    Knowledge of history and implementation of Jordan's Principle
    Experience working with multi-sectoral partnerships
    Knowledge of the impacts of colonialism, Indian Residential Schools, intergenerational trauma and systemic racism on First Nation education and children
    Team player with a "families first" approach who can work collaboratively with a variety of people within complex systems
    Exceptional organizational and problem-solving skills
    Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work productively with families, team members, supervisors, and other internal and external stakeholders
    Ability to work under pressure and to independently manage a wide range of tasks, often within short timelines and with precision
    Ability to maintain confidentiality when developing and handling sensitive information
    Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to write clear, concise documents and reports with a high degree of accuracy and for a variety of audiences
    Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate to a variety of audiences
    Proficiency in the use of computers (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
    Ability to speak Anishinaabe or Dakota languages an asset


    OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
    Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector search
    Clear Child and Adult Abuse Registry Checks
    Completion of "Respect in Schools" training
    Must have a valid class 5 Manitoba Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle as travel will be required
    If the candidate is a member of a registered profession, the candidate must be a member in good standing of their regulatory body
