    Chair – Ordnance Survey – London/Southampton

    Ordnance Survey (OS) is Great Britain's National Mapping Service. A big-data powerhouse, it creates, maintains, and disseminates consistent, definitive, authoritative and up-to-date geospatial and cartographic data of Great Britain.

    OS is a government company, with substantial day-to-day operating independence. UK Government Investments acts as the shareholder on behalf of the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology.

    OS manages and maintains a critical data infrastructure, the National Geographic Database (NGD). Spanning roads and buildings, to footpaths and cycleways, OS experts help the UK maintain its position as one of the world's most advance geospatial nations, providing leadership in location data standards and services.

    OS has evolved into a new phase of commercial growth and is in the midst of delivering a multi-year transformation of its data, technology and people.

    With 90% of the solutions and products in digital form, OS's heritage is still represented in a comprehensive range of printed leisure maps. Today, OS's iconic paper maps account for just a small fraction of revenue. The rest involves big data, producing super accurate geographic information that is used by the UK government, businesses and individuals.

    OS seeks a chair who will form an effective, dynamic, and constructive partnership with the chief executive. They will act as a sounding board, providing support, advice, and challenge, whilst retaining critical objectivity and judgement. OS seeks an experienced non-executive director with the highest levels of integrity and credibility, who can bring their industry experience to take Ordnance Survey to the next level of commercial success and sustainability alongside an enthusiasm and passion for the OS brand, its mission and the role it plays in national life.

    Essential Criteria

    • A record of board level business leadership, delivering commercial success, preferably in new or fast-growing markets within the data or technology sectors.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to build effective team relationships with board members, to mentor and support the CEO and executive team, and experience of managing complex senior stakeholder relationships.
    • The ability to think strategically, set clear direction, communicate effectively to command the confidence of a range of audiences and proven experience of chairing in an executive or non-executive capacity.
    • Senior experience of supporting significant organisational transformation, modernisation or culture change programmes.
    • A record of achievement in a non-executive director role, demonstrating sound knowledge of corporate governance good practice and the ability to work effectively as part of a board.

    Desirable Criteria

    • Previous experience as a Non-executive Chair of the board of ideally a substantial and complex corporate organisation.
    • Experience of working at senior levels to deliver commercial growth within or alongside the public sector, including in a global context.
    • An understanding of the opportunities for Ordnance Survey to realise benefits and commercial success through new technologies.
    • Experience in driving diversity and inclusion across an organisation.
