    Edwards Bell Jewitt LLP is a law firm serving Indigenous Nations, people, communities and organizations. We are based in Thunder Bay and serve clients across Treaty 9, Treaty 5, Treaty 3 and Robinson Superior treaty areas.

    We are looking for a full-time Practice Manager/Legal Assistant to support our practice areas, including corporate/commercial and wills/estates practice, litigation, labour and employment as well as general legal work for Indigenous Nations, organizations, and people. Depending on the skills, experiences and interests of the successful candidate, the job can be flexible in terms of the types of work that the candidate will focus on.

    The ideal candidate will be deeply integrated into our legal files, helping to coordinate the bigger picture and support client care by participating in client meetings and calls, taking the lead on logistics planning and file management/organization, coordinating workflows, tracking deliverables, and generally helping us stay on top of our service commitments to our clients. The work will involve drafting, letter writing, creation of presentations, and client communication.

    The Practice Manager/Legal Assistant will also be involved in business development and marketing initiatives for the firm.

    We will provide training in areas of need, but these are generally the traits we are looking for in a perfect candidate:

    • Confidence: someone who can communicate confidently and candidly by asking for what is needed, making suggestions for improvements, and holding people accountable for following processes and delivering results. Comfortable speaking with lawyers, Chiefs, Executive Directors, and First Nations community members.
    • High Performing: someone who is disciplined, and takes responsibility for outcomes. Highly organized, with an ability to multitask, and who enjoys taking ownership for moving tasks forward.
    • Supportive: someone who enjoys providing excellent service, and who thinks of ways to assist whether or not asked to do so.
    • Detail-Oriented: someone who can proofread, has an eye for design, and takes pride in making things look nice.
    • Tech-savvy: someone who understands technology, and can help others see the value in technological innovation.
    • Reflective: someone who knows and understands the history of colonialism in this country, and wants to work to support Indigenous self-determination and sovereignty.

    It is of primary importance that the right candidate be dedicated to serving the communities of Treaty 9, Treaty 5, Treaty 3 and Robinson Superior treaty areas.

    Qualifications and Experience

    • Experienced in legal support in our practice areas, but willing to consider candidates with varying levels of experience and education;
    • Post secondary education preferred;
    • Experience working with Indigenous communities and individuals;
    • Knowledge of and experience with First Nations of Treaty 9, Treaty 5, Treaty 3 and Robinson Superior treaty areas;

    We offer competitive salary and extended benefits. A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this position is $47,500 to $55,000, depending on experience, qualifications and fit. Our office is based in Thunder Bay, ON.
