The AESO (Alberta Electric System Operator) is seeking qualified candidates for a position within the Generation Forecasting & Resource Adequacy department. Reporting to the Manager, Generation Forecasting & Resource Adequacy, the Market Fundamentals Analyst will support a variety of initiatives within the Generation Forecasting and Resource Adequacy team. Duties may include, financial modeling of traditional thermal, renewable and emerging technology generation assets (ie., energy storage, small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs), carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) and hydrogen-fired generation), developing delivered cost of electricty assessments, developing long-term adequacy outlooks, research and analysis of electricty and other commodity markets, forecasting future trends in power markets, supporting commercial activities, developing market reports, maintaining databases and ad hoc requests. This role requires flexibility to work on multiple projects and to deliver results on a timely basis.

The analyst will research and assess information, data, and trends relevant to the electricity market forecasts including economic, policy, technological, financial, operational, resource adequacy and regional factors. The analyst will be required to track and understand current energy forecasting industry trends, issues, and standards and assist in preparation, writing, and review of forecasting reports and documents. The analyst will provide support to Forecasting and other AESO departments in a range of forecasting related activities including market simulations using AURORA and SERVM.

Accountabilities include but are not limited to:

• Develop long-term adeqacy assessments through the use and enhancement of existing models.
• Support the reseach, development and financial modeling for transformational technologies (ie, wind, solar, geothermal, energy storage, CCUS, hydrogen, SMRs) providing insightful analyses based on historical, current and forward looking information.
• Participate in the creation of Long Term Outlooks, delivered cost of electricity analysis, regulatory analysis and ad hoc analysis.
• Manage the scope, schedule and delivery of analysis and forecast information to various internal and external stakeholders.
• Provide analysis, interpretation and insights into the Alberta and interconnected electricity markets.
• Support assessments of power markets and other commodity markets (i.e., natural gas, oil)
• Research industry trends and developments.
• Support data gathering and analysis initiatives for internal and external customers.
• Participate in the development of presentations, papers and briefing notes for internal and external stakeholders.
• Collaborate with other departments on how to present analytical insights, forecasting or simulation information.
• Develop and document internal processes, customer requests, and assumptions.
• Expore and define opportunities for process improvement and evolution and implement approved changes in a collaborative manner.
• Maintain and build key internal and external stakeholder relationships.
• Promote collaboration and teamwork and share information, ideas, and knowledge.

What you'll bring to us:

• Undergraduate degree in Economics, Mathematics, Engineering, Business or a relevant discipline; Graduate Degree considered an asset
• 2 to 5 years experience in a research, analytical role, or business development role.
• Generation financial and operational modeling combined with renewables business development experience is an asset.
• Experience in commodity markets (i.e., electricity, natural gas, oil) in an analytical or commercial role is an asset.
• Modelling experience incorporating spreadsheets, databases, statistical software or programming languages is asset; use of AURORA and SERVM are desirable.
• Power systems operations and electricity market understanding is desirable.
• Demonstrated flexibility within roles is an asset.
• Strong quantitative aptitude and demonstrated analytical ability
