    Role purpose

    As a Principal Business Analyst within the Digital and Technology Directorate at the British Council, your role is crucial in bridging the gap between business needs and technology solutions. You will play a key role in shaping and executing the digital strategy and transformation initiatives, ensuring alignment with the organization's mission and corporate priorities. You will foster a community of practice around Business Analysts excellence within Digital and Technology and the wider organisation. Working collaboratively within a global team structure, you will contribute to the creation of digital products, optimization of platforms, and enhancement of overall digital capability.

    Role Context

    The Digital and Technology (D&T) team collaborate with other parts of the British Council to foster a digitally enabled, customer centric organisation.     • The Engineering division brings together Engineering, QA, Architecture and Delivery expertise to ensure excellence in the development of our global products and services. Encompassing Reuse, Buy and Build strategies, it champions community communities of practices, defining solutions and core-capabilities and to create amazing products. The division ensures, through architecture, delivery of strategic, enterprise-wide solutions to business problems, proactive management of technology risks, setting practices, standards and guidance to the wider organisation for flexible approaches to technology adoption to meet business objectives, and enable strategic delivery.

    Accountabilities/Responsibilities:

  • Stakeholder collaboration and requirements gathering: Engage with stakeholders, including senior management, to understand business objectives and capture requirements for the creation, purchase, or reuse of products, utilising workshops as a key method for requirement gathering.
  • Champion and facilitate continuous improvement initiatives within the community of Business Analysts, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence.
  • Workshop Facilitation: Facilitate workshops to gather requirements collaboratively, ensuring active participation and capturing diverse perspectives for more accurate insights.
  • Digital Product Support: Provide critical insights and analysis to support the development of digital products, ensuring alignment with accurately captured customer needs and business value.
  • Providing pre-project analysis, supporting Business Case development, and outlining options to enable effective decision making and authorisations.
  • Supporting the analysis of Digital and Technology contracts, supporting renegotiation.
  • Evaluates the technical feasibility of business requests during requirements gathering, making high-level evaluations and asking the right questions to clarify technical constraints.
  • Takes responsibility for investigative work to determine requirements and specify effective business processes, through improvements in information systems, data management, practices, procedures, organisation, and equipment.
  • Supports the technology delivery directors throughout the demand process, understanding demand requirements, delivering analysis and problem resolution, and collaborating with stakeholders to ensure proposed solutions are properly understood and appropriately exploited to deliver expected outcomes.
  • Digital Capability Enhancement: Contribute to efforts aimed at enhancing digital capability across the organisation, setting best practices for Business Analysis methodologies with a focus on precise requirement capture.
  • Operational Efficiency: Work towards operational efficiency through the strategic use of technology, ensuring solutions align with accurately captured business requirements.
  • Supports the benefit planning and realisation process.
  • Contributes to the continuous improvement of the BA team processes and practices through communities of practices and line management responsibilities.
  • Cross-Divisional Collaboration: Collaborate with the other disciplines within Digital and Technology especially the Designers and Architects to align business analysis efforts with overall digital strategy, emphasising accurate requirement capture.
  • Collects and maintains data in a consistent form, providing an evidence base to meet and enforce delivery standards and inform assurance reporting to senior management.
  • Maintains quality documents such as the requirements traceability matrix to ensure business demands are met and key decisions are captured.
  • Elicits requirements using a range of techniques, translating business needs into requirements (functional and non-functional) and communicating these requirements to developers.
  • Recommends solutions taking into consideration capability, cost/benefit analysis, and strategic direction.
  • Relationship & Stakeholder Management:
  • Works with minimal supervision, planning, prioritising, and managing time effectively across multiple projects.
  • Champion and facilitate continuous improvement initiatives within the community of Business Analysts, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence.
  • Works proactively, communicating and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, appraising options.
  • Collaborates with and facilitates stakeholder groups, providing challenge where appropriate to ensure that proposed solutions are properly understood and appropriately exploited to deliver expected outcomes.

    • Requirements of the role:

  • Experience and demonstration of working in a Business Analyst or similar role supporting business delivery programmes that impact across multiple functions / business areas and regions.
  • Proven leadership experience including developing relationships with different areas of the business, building collaborate relationships and tenacity to drive projects forward.
  • Experience of requirements elicitation and definition
  • Producing analysis documents - Experience providing clear and concise documents including: Business Cases Functional and Non-functional requirements in user Story and other formats Feasibility studies and 'as-is / to-be' analysis, considering existing IT architecture.
  • Experience in contributing to the development and execution of roadmaps for enhancing digital product development across the organisation.
  • Experience in optimising operational efficiency through the strategic use of technology, aligning solutions with precise business requirements.
  • Building Community of Practices: Establish and foster a community of practices around Business Analysis excellence, encouraging knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
  • Experience in collaborating holistically with diverse disciplines within Digital and Technology, fostering synergy in business analysis efforts aligned with the broader digital strategy.
  • Written and verbal proficiency (CEF 1) in English is required.
  • Degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
