SUPERBOWL 58

The NFL Superbowl is probably the
most over-hyped sporting event on
the planet. So for that very reason
alone the game itself is usually
always a disapointment.

Last night's matchup between the
8an Francisco 49ers and the defending Superbowl champs, the
Kanas City Chiefs, was actually not all that bad, as NFL games
go. It was low scoring and went more or less right down to the
wire. And this time, as not always the case, it was won by a
pretty nifty little touchdown as opposed to a field goal, in
overtime, so the fans all got their money’s with from the game.

The people sitting at home or in Superbowl parties also got
their money's worth from the game. But the rest of the stuff
they had to endure, to wit, the halftime show and most of the
commercials, were abysmal.

I'm on the record pointing out that with the advent of the
Internet, the other media in the advertising mix have gone to
hell. Maybe it’s because anybody who was any good at TV
advertising left the business a long time ago. What you end up
with are are lot of variations on old ideas, not even done all that
well and almost totally reliant on effects, as oppposed to any
kind of selling argument or idea.

The halftime show was also a bit of a joke with a big marching
band and a couple of singers I didn’t recognize. It seemed like
everything was aimed at younger people, most of whom could
not have afforded a ticket to the game.

Bob Hoffman, a great advertising critic, harps on this very
fact, pointing out that the advertising industry is losing a lot of
opportunity by refusing talk to the people with actual buying
power.

And then, of course, there were all the cutaways to Taylor
Swift and her little entourage, cheering on her Chief's boyfriend.

It was all typical American network bullshit at its finest.
