THINKING OUT LOUD
VOLUME 6

A lot of the people | know on social media are
advertising folk. And the ones who are around
my age worked in the ad agency industry at a
time when advertising could still actually

have a measurable influence on consumers.

But | look at a good deal of the ‘advertising’
| see today and there really seems to be some-
thing lacking in it. Let's call it an idea.

Since | no longer watch network TV and get
all my news on line, a lot of the advertising | see
comes in little disguises. Quaint little headlines
and even quainter little stories that that seem to
be working hard to do anything but give me a
good reason to buy whatever the hell they are
trying to sell. And then there's those little low
budget Keystone cops product demo videos
which are even more pathetic.

And after digesting a steady stream of these
mind numbing marshmallows, | think about the
folks who are paying good money to have this
tripe represent them out there in the big, bad
world and all | can think is that real branding,
which we all used to defend with our reputa-
tions, very much appears to have died and
gone to hell. Business

A Sure Sign Of Spring

Jim Murray · Went outside this morning to do my walking and noticed that this was on my mailbox. These birds must have worked all night on this. Hope they got paid overtime. We think they're Robins. I carefully moved the nest to another location.

Why Advertising Should Tell Stories (It Didn't Hurt the Bible)

Many moons ago, I loved long copy ads. Not because they filled each sentence with product promises, but because they told a story. Storytelling was an art back then. William Zinsser, author of On Writing Well, described how people would read long stories in The New Yorker “for th ...

Has Advertising Lost Its Way In The Digital World?

This is not a rant but is definitely an editorial piece, which means it is just my opinion based on the stuff I have seen and heard over the years. You can agree or disagree or whatever. I’m not a journalist, just an ex-agency guy who observes the industry from without. · I grew ...
