    Senior Business Partner, Advanced Hydrocarbons

    Alberta Innovates (AI) is seeking a Senior Business Partner to work closely with program areas within Clean Energy and other strategic areas within Alberta Innovates – Clean Resources, industry, government departments and academia to accelerate innovation in technology development. The Senior Business Partner supports programs and projects with industry and academia to advance industry's adoption of innovative technologies which will be of benefit to Alberta, particularly with respect to the management of Alberta's natural resources. The portfolio accelerates innovation intended to improve resource production efficiency and economics by decreasing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and freshwater use while simultaneously increasing economic value.

    Reporting to the Executive Director, Advanced Hydrocarbons, the Senior Business Partner, Advanced Hydrocarbons will focus on project advisory services to support the Clean Resources team as needed as well as particular focus on collaborative projects with our Emissions Reduction Alberta partnership. In addition to providing technical competence, the position will enhance the team's capacity in commercialization skills.

    The successful incumbent will be accountable for (but not limited to) the following:

  • Manage programs and projects for the Clean Resources team with industry and other stakeholders to advance technology development. Champion industry's adoption of innovative technologies which will be of benefit to Alberta through guiding investments into key projects.
  • Undertake technology scanning and market intelligence, identification of trends, issues, and challenges. Identify high impact initiatives and projects based on gap analysis and identified needs. Recommend strategic and investment decisions.
  • Foster a collaborative culture between governments, government ministries, universities, research organizations, industry, and stakeholders. Collaborate with other technical staff in the planning, development and delivery of all other research and technology investments of the corporation. Promote AI Clean Energy programs at conferences and workshops.
  • Advise, recommend, and report on the progress and results of programs, projects, and initiatives within Clean Resources and initiatives within Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) as required.
  • Educational Requirement:

  • Degree or Advanced Degree in Science, Engineering or in a related field; extended work experience may be substituted for educational credentials, if appropriate
  • Experience and Qualifications we are looking for:

  • Minimum 5 years' managing research programs and projects, including engineering/scientific analysis.
  • Experience in commercialization of technology and IP management.
  • Familiar with Alberta's social, economic, environmental, and technological needs and priorities.
  • Experience in working in/with government, post-secondary research and industry including leading research projects and participating in joint industry projects.
  • Nice to have:

  • Experience in working with senior technical and management professionals from industry, environmental NGOs and other stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of relevant Government of Alberta business planning and policy frameworks (e.g. Alberta Science and Research Authority Act, the Alberta Environmental Assessment Act, oil and gas sector regulations and policies, and related codes, regulations, and collective agreements).
  • Experience in the management of research programs and projects and skills in supporting the development and management of Alberta Innovates – Clean Energy activities, initiatives, and projects.
  • Skills Required:
