    Description

    The Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering invites applications for a Research Coordinator. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

    Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the incumbent will coordinate all research related activities under GeoS's and the PI's responsibility, including all related support staff, coordination and tracking of associated budget, grant writing and submissions, proposal development, grant implementation, data collection, data management, literature searches, and management of research reporting. Peak periods (typically between May and August) may be stressful as summer research students join the research team. As the research team supports field pilots, there may be required weekend/evening hours. The position will be situated in an environment where there may be ambiguity, continuous change and shifting priorities. It is anticipated that this position may require some flexibility in terms of hours per week (to be mutually agreed) and will require local travel and work off-campus at times.

    Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

    Leadership:

    • Responsible for managerial discretion of direct reports.
    • Design promotional strategies and disseminate related materials for recruitment and advertising studies.
    • Ensure that hermeneutic research methodology is implemented in a consistent manner.
    • Implement and maintain research project budget.
    • Create financial projections and adjustments throughout the fiscal year. Exercise appropriate controls, and monitor and reconcile accounts.
    • Develop estimates of time and resources for projects' milestones.
    • Coordinate the project activities and staff to ensure that studies progress in accordance with established timelines.
    • Supervision of Research Assistants (summer students)
    • Assist in supervision of other project staff (Research Students, Graduate Students and Postdocs).
    • Apply specialised knowledge and scientific principles to review, critically appraise, and interpret published literature.
    • Undertake literature searches.
    • Assist in the design and maintenance of databases, data collection forms, error checking methods, and related programs for collection, analysis and reporting of data.
    • Write and review sections of research report papers, funding proposals, grants, and abstracts.
    • Present at meetings, seminars, and conferences.
    • Coordinate and deliver industry engagement events (workshops, virtual meetings, seminars).
    • Coordinates priorities of the research project to meet deadlines.
    • Will be required to liaise with senior researchers and leaders on issues that are outside of the scope of responsibility.
    • Define strategies, establish standard operating procedures and execute plans.
    • Will support teaching and research and conveying expertise and knowledge to all personnel.
    • Instructs others in the use of project management tools.
    • Responsible for developing and managing project budget.

    Communication and Scientific Contribution:

    • Explains difficult issues and works to build alignment around a complex situation.
    • Communicate data quality issues with site coordinators and outstanding discrepancies with reporting requirements to the sponsor and the Principle Investigator.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
    • Responsible for writing, compiling and submitting operational grants for funding applications.
    • Design and undertake own research with a clear focus on knowledge translation, including publishing in peer-reviewed research articles.
    • Very limited scientific contributions to the research project.
    • May publish and/or present technical papers to external audiences; participates in significant internal publications.
    • Provides clear direction to staff in fast changing environment when there is complex and partial information.
    • Manage and communicate evolving research goals and maintain a view of the big picture and overall research objectives.
    • Responsible for developing and managing project budget.

    Qualifications / Requirements:

    Required

    • 3-5 years related experience and completion of Graduate degree in related discipline (Master's Degree required/ PhD preferred).
    • A combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
    • Advanced technical skills with growing scientific contributions.
    • Understands and applies regulatory/compliance/scientific requirements relative to their role.
    • Requires good understanding of concepts, theories and principles as they relate to management of the research project.
    • Coordinates the administrative processes of the research project or unit.
    • Demonstrates effective use of technology and processes to complete assignments.
    • Explores through experimentation; new ideas and knowledge are used with increasing frequency.
    • Ability to solve complex problems.
    • Knowledge of University of Calgary business and research systems.
    • Expertise in both qualitative and quantitative methodology.
    • Experience leading research initiatives and/or clinical trials.
    • Substantial equivalent project /research management experience in an academic environment.
    • Highly effective time management and project management skills.
    • Highly effective oral and written communication skills.
    • High level research skills and knowledge related to energy systems.
    • Personal initiative and ability to work independently, attention to detail, and teamwork orientation.
    • Expertise in both qualitative and quantitative methodology.
    • Experience leading research initiatives.
    • Requires good understanding of concepts, theories and principles as they relate to management of the research project.
    • Coordinates the administrative processes of the research project or unit.
    • Demonstrates effective use of technology and processes to complete assignments.

    Desirable:

    • Ability to multi-task and deal with multiple simultaneous priorities in an effective, efficient manner.
    • Knowledge of university infrastructure and research administrative processes.
    • Experience in geothermal systems, subsurface energy or power systems.
