    Teaching & Student Support Specialist
    University of Alberta EN Dean of Engineering Competition No. – A D1 Closing Date – Will remain open until filled.

    Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience in accordance with the Academic Teaching Staff Agreement (ATS). Location – North Campus Edmonton. This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person.

    As we look to grow our programs to more than 6000 undergraduate and 2000 graduate students by 2026, we are seeking a design instructor for our design courses and curriculum for a 3-year term, with the possibility of renewal.

    If you wish to focus your career on resourcing and developing students, please apply Position The Teaching & Student Support Specialist will be part of an instructional team responsible for the delivery of a portfolio of initiatives to enhance the first-year student experience as well as the Undergraduate Programs of the Faculty.

    They will focus primarily on the Bridge 2 Engineering Program, our flagship program for supporting students transition to university.

    The program is largely student-delivered with participants benefiting from their first-hand advice alongside best practices in study skills, time management, and wellness, among other focus areas.

    They will report to the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Programs and join a team of instructional and professional staff focused on the Faculty's core value of helping students succeed.

    This position will be a 3-year-term appointment under the Academic Teaching Staff (ATS) collective agreement and comes with a comprehensive benefits package which can be viewed at: Faculty & Staff Benefits.

    Pierre Mertiny Professor and Associate Dean, Undergraduate Programs Office of the Dean, Faculty of Engineering Duties:


    • Support and expand the Bridge2Engg programs designed to prepare incoming students for success in engineering programs.
    • The program aims to support students' transition from high school in areas including resilience and study skills, as well as the course work and pace of university programs.
    • The successful candidate will supervise a team of approximately 8 students employed annually to deliver the program.
    • Be part of the instructional team that delivers courses that all engineering students take focusing on the information and skills needed to be successful in university and in their careers (ENGG 100, ENGG 200, ENGG 400)
    • Knowledge of a variety of learning practices to motivate and engage all learners and develop important knowledge and skills for success in the workforce.
    • Develop and deliver new programs, courses, and initiatives aimed at enhancing the student experience, including working collaboratively with a team in the first year of engineering.
    • Support the renewal of engineering programs collaboratively with Departments in the Faculty of Engineering.
    • Support the Undergraduate Programs Officer with accreditation activities, including the application of continuous improvement processes.
    • Design, develop, and support evidence-based and progressive strategies to reduce student workload and stress.
    • Work collaboratively with the student services team to design and develop materials and strategies to recruit and onboard students into engineering, with a focus on applying evidence-based practices to attract and create belonging for students who are members of underrepresented groups in engineering

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Undergraduate degree in a related field
    • Experience teaching or instructing young adults
    • Excellent verbal communication skills, especially in speaking to large audiences
    • Strong knowledge of pedagogy, including experience with course or program development
    • Ability to make informed and equitable decisions to enable students of many abilities and backgrounds to be successful here
    • Demonstrated evidence of teaching, leadership and communication skills
    • Demonstrated knowledge in developing student assessment strategies

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience teaching at the high school or undergraduate level
    • Masters or PhD preferred
    • Experience in the application of equity, diversity, and inclusivity to adult learning and post-secondary education and knowledge of the inequities and under representation of several groups in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)
    • Knowledge of and experience with the integration of the Indigenization, decolonization, and Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action in adult learning and/or post-secondary programs
