    The Opportunity

    The Ministry of Environment, Environmental Protection Branch is seeking a multi-talented individual with a strong engineering and/or science background to deliver results-based environmental protection programs throughout the province of Saskatchewan.

    As a Lead Environmental Protection Officer in the Environmental Protection Branch, you will be responsible for:

  • Project management of the Non-Uranium Abandoned Mines Program, including contractor procurement and oversight, budgeting, contract administration, progress tracking/reporting, site inspections, and general program management;
  • Administration of regulatory programs, ensuring compliance with provincial regulations, completing compliance inspections;
  • Assisting in policy and legislation development, and resolving complex environmental and public health issues related to the province's ongoing development of mining, industrial, commercial, air quality, solid waste management, impacted sites, and environmental emergencies programs; and
  • Providing leadership and mentorship to Environmental Protection Officers and Environmental Emergency Officers, as well as providing support to the unit manager.
  • Ideal Candidate

  • The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
  • Experience with managing environmental site assessment and corrective action projects;
  • Strong knowledge of risk-based environmentally impacted site management regulatory requirements and industry practices;
  • Experience with mine decommissioning and reclamation practices;
  • Strong knowledge and abilities in mentoring, leadership, facilitation, conflict resolution and team building;
  • Knowledge of Provincial environmental legislation;
  • Knowledge and awareness of environmental and public safety issues associated with municipal, industrial, and commercial operations including air, hazardous substances, and waste dangerous goods;
  • Knowledge of environmental monitoring and reporting at municipal, industrial, or commercial operations;
  • Experience with policy and planning techniques;
  • Experience with problem-solving and strategic thinking approaches while mentoring and providing leadership to multiple staff and managing various projects;
  • Ability to clearly and accurately discuss complex environmental issues, policies, and procedures to diverse groups (including peers) at a level appropriate to the audience, and concisely draft and compose written documents; and
  • Ability to educate, facilitate, and persuade others to achieve consensus or resolve conflict in highly polarized situations.
  • Typically, the competencies required for this position can be achieved through a degree in engineering or science combined with related environmental work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. You will have demonstrated the ability to adhere to the values of the Saskatchewan Public Service.

    The headquarters for this position will be in Saskatoon, Prince Albert, or Regina. Travel to remote locations of the province and working flexible hours are required for this position. The successful candidate is expected to be or work towards becoming competent as an Environmental Emergencies Officer (EEO) and participate in associated on-call shift rotations for responding to environmental emergencies such as hazardous materials discharges. This includes being able to respond and travel to discharge (spill) incidents on short notice.
