14 MONTHS OF REHAB

As of yesterday I will have been home for a year
and two months after a four month stay in 5
different hospitals to get rid of an Ecoli infec-
tion that had lodged itself in my spine, and took
away, not my legs, but my balance.

During this time I had two re-hab sessions of 8
weeks each, twice a week, and the physio ther-
apists got me on my feet.

Then while working on a walker at home, 1

had a fall and tore a ligament in my upper arm,
which precented me from doing any practice
walking for several months. So most of that time
was spent strengthening my legs.

Once my arm was suitably healed I got back
into it, and along with my rehab sessions at
Shaver, was able to get back up on the walker.
And then, shortly thereafter, | started taking my
first unassisted steps, up to 4 x 60 feet in
between the parallel bars.

Once I got home, I quickly figured out how to
get my butt into the pool and started swimming
again. Got up to 30 lengths per session, plus
free walking back and forth across the pool
about 20 times per session.

After leaving Shaver, Heather and I joined the
spinal cord program at Brock and we go there
twice a week and | have a whole little gym at
my disposal, for free walking, and balance and
some very good upper body equipment, which
I should be able to start using next week.

On the other days, | do my free walking on my
wheelchair ramp and front porch and have
started using a cane to compensate for my lack
of balance, which is very slowly returning.

I'm spending gradually more and more time
moving around with my walker and my confi-
dence with it has pretty much been restored,

Over the winter | want to concentrate on losing
weight, which will make everything easier, and
walking as much as I can. So I'm praying for a
winter without a lot of snow. I can deal with the
cold.

So that's where I'm at. Life is getting back to
normal in a limited way and | am making good
Pits of progress every day.
