    Role Responsibilities

    Reporting to the Director of Industrial Climate Policy, the Senior Manager of Environmental Economics is responsible for the delivery of socio-economic modelling and analysis for policy development within Alberta Environment and Protected Areas. The development and maintenance of a complex and detailed modelling framework is critical to achieving Alberta's desired environmental outcomes while understanding socio-economic impacts and supporting economic opportunities. The Environmental Economics team is responsible to develop and implement robust mechanisms to assess and predict the impacts to inform policy and program options and recommendations of Alberta Environment and Protected Areas as well as support cross-ministry initiatives. The team is also responsible to assess the impacts of emergent regional, federal and international polices that impact Alberta related to environment. This team will also work across Alberta Environment and Protected Areas to provide detailed economic analysis on air, climate, energy, water, waste, circular economy, plastics, biodiversity and land policy and programs.

    The Senior Manager is responsible for building and maintaining effective working relationships with ministries, governments, industry, Indigenous peoples, academic, think tanks, and other stakeholders that will help achieve the Government's and Ministry's environmental outcomes. The Senior Manager must work within the context of multiple interests and distributed influence, and of broad interests and objectives of the Government of Alberta in developing modelling and analysis informing Alberta's environmental policy and programs. The Senior Manager's role is one of leadership and oversight to direct and guide the efforts of the team in developing analysis and frameworks that contribute to achieving Alberta's objectives.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Leading analysis, including forecasting and modeling where required, to quantify costs and benefits of projects, programs and policies associated with implementation of Alberta's environmental policy and conservation. This includes supporting all divisions of the department, and assessments related to air, climate, biodiversity, water, land, waste, circular economy, plastics and energy initiatives.

    • Leading greenhouse gas emission forecasting and modeling to quantify and analyze costs and benefits of projects, programs and policies associated with implementation of Alberta's approach to climate policy.

    • Leading the preparation of province-wide greenhouse gas emissions reporting related to actual and forecasting progress toward targets. This includes influencing the baselines, models and accounting of the Government of Alberta and Environment and Climate Change Canada.

    • Ensuring team members have outstanding relationships and helping ensure outstanding departmental relationships with multi-stakeholder partners, neighbouring provinces, federal staff and municipal governments and within their areas of responsibility.

    • Being responsible for management and due diligence on contracts and grants delivered through the section.
